Berol HS

Berol HS is a sodium alkyl naphthalene sulfonate with surface active characteristics designed for use as a hydrotroping co-surfactant in water-based cleaning formulations.

Berol HS has been additionally processed to reduce significantly the color and odor relative to other commercially-available alkyl naphthalene sulfonates. The low color and odor permit the use of Berol HS in consumer formulations where standard products impart aesthetically unacceptable properties.

Cleaning formulations containing Berol HS are friable, drying to a powder, which can be vacuumed away, unlike many other hydrotropes which form sticky pastes on drying. This property makes Berol HS particularly suitable for use in institutional and domestic carpet cleaners.

Berol HS promotes “sheeting” of water from a cleaned surface on rinsing, making it particularly suitable for use in vehicle cleaning formulations and rinse aids.

Hydrotroping performance
The graph shows the amounts of Berol HS and sodium xylene sulfonate (as a 40% aqueous solution) required to clear a typical alkaline cleaning formulation (5% Berol 260, 9% EDTA (40%), 4% TKPP and water to 100%) at 50°C. A lower number indicates a more efficient hydrotrope.
